NMR Spectrometers

The NMR Structural Biology Facility contains Varian INOVA 400, 500 and 600 MHz four-channel NMR spectrometers with quadruple resonance capabilities and pulsed-gradient probes. Each instrument is equipped with two waveform generators. Cryogenic probes with sensitivity better than 3 times that of conventional, room-tempertaure probes have been installed on the 500 and 600 MHZ spectrometers. Contact the Facility Manager, Dr Mark Maciejewski, to arrange spectrometer access.

Fees for academic use
600 MHz spectrometer: $4.80 per hour (internal users) / $6.00 per hour (external users).
500 MHz spectrometer: $4.00 per hour (internal users) / $5.00 per hour (external users).
400 MHz spectrometer: Unlimited walkup access is available for a fixed bi-annual fee of $250 and a fee of $1.00 per hour.
Startup fees A start-up fee of $50 is applicable for all spectrometer use except for the 400 for laboratories which participate in the bi-annual fee for whom the start-up fee is waived.

Fees for commercial users
600 MHz spectrometer: $100 per hour (1-8 hrs) / $50 per hour (> 8 hrs).
500 MHz spectrometer: $75 per hour (1-8 hrs) / $37.50 per hour (> 8 hrs).
400 MHz spectrometer: Contact Dr Mark Maciejewski.

Computational Facility

The NMR Computational Facility contains Linux servers, an Apple Macintosh workstation, seven Linux workstations, monochrome and color laser printers. For computationally demanding applications a 20-node (40 processor) Apple Macintosh Xserve cluster is available. The computational laboratory provides software for processing and analysis of NMR data, calculation of molecular structures from experimental data, and molecular structure visualization. Currently available software packages include NMRPipe, The Rowland NMR Toolkit, Felix, NMRView, CYANA, X-PLOR, MOLMOL, InsightII, VMD, and others.

Fees: Unlimited access to the facility is provided for $400 per academic lab per year plus a small charge per page for color prints.

Circular Dichroism Facility

The Peng Lab maintains a Jasco 710 spectropolarimeter for both near- and far-UV circular dichroism studies. The instrument contains a Peltier thermostated sample holder for thermal melts. Contact Dr Zheng-yu Peng directly to arrange access [Phone: (860) 679-2885; Email: peng@sun.uchc.edu].

Fees
Internal users: a small fee (about $2 per hour) to cover maintenance costs.
External academic users: $25 per hour.
Commercial users: $50 per hour.

Multi-Angle Laser Light Scattering Facility

A multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS) facility is available for investigating the size, shape, and oligomerization of macromolecules. Light scattering is measured using a Wyatt miniDAWN laser photometer. Concentration can be measured by refractive index and/or UV absorbance. Contact Dr Glenn King to arrange access [Phone: (860) 679-8364; Email: glenn@psel.uchc.edu].

Fees
Internal users: $65 set-up + $30 per sample.
External academic users: $100 set-up + $50 per sample.
Commercial users: $150 set-up + $75 per sample.
Unassisted use: $75/day (internal), $125/day (external academic).
